This week, speculators pushed oil prices to the highest levels in more than a year – despite weak demand and plentiful supply. These soaring prices in the midst of a weak economy prove that energy markets are broken. More importantly, Americans may soon pay higher gasoline and travel costs if speculators continue gambling billions of dollars in oil.

Increased costs threaten to worsen budget problems for many families and businesses. Given that even OPEC thinks prices are too high, it is obvious that we must stop excessive oil speculation before it is too late.

Fortunately, over the last week, Congress took action to keep energy prices affordable. Thanks in large part to the thousands of e-mails, letters and phone calls generated by you, two congressional committees approved legislation to reform energy markets. This legislation would increase transparency and make it more difficult for Wall Street speculators to manipulate energy prices.

Only a very small percentage of bills make it this far in the lawmaking process. Your continued support made this happen. As this issue moves to the next step in the legislative process, we will let you know how you can best help make a difference.
